A free ALL-DIGITAL showing of Japanese animation!
The UT Austin Anime Club will be presenting its eighth screening for the spring semester on Friday, March 7th. The showing is free to all with an interest in great animation and stories.
Presenting the Anime Club's Semesterly All-Digital Showing!
What is the All-Digital Showing, you may ask? This is when the Anime Club at UT goes all-out to give you a fabulous treat for ears and eyes. All programs are being shown on laserdisc, for excellent picture quality, and the room will be set up for surround-sound stereo. My personal favorite is the Blue Seed opening music, cranked up. Sugoi... *_* *ahem* So! While the usual programs will not be shown so that we may bring you this special feature, this is still an evening not to be missed!
Note!
Because this is more material than is usually shown in one evening, we plan to start promptly AT 7 PM! If you come in late, use the back door!!! This also means the break will only be 50 minutes, not the usual 90 or so.
Please keep in mind that showing schedules are always tentative, and that programs are not necessarily listed here in the order they'll be shown.
On the program are:
Most listings are linked to the show's entry in the Anime Web Guide, or some other relevant web page; short-short summaries written by Rebecca Sims. All shows for this viewing are subtitled in English.
- Super Atragon #1
I have absolutely no idea what this is. But I'm sure it's interesting! And by gosh, it'll look and sound good!
- Blue Seed #5
This is the story of a young woman, Momiji, who is the only person who can protect the world from demons which threaten it, because she is a descendant of the princess whose champion defeated the demons the last time around. Her death will destroy the demons, unless they are able to kill her behind a special field. Earlier in the series, they attempted this, but she was rescued by someone who appears to be another demon. Momiji is now a member of the Special Forces unit in charge of trying to fight the demons. The opening music alone, as I mentioned earlier, is enough to wait around for.
- Patlabor 2 - Ghost in the Shell
Patlabor stands for "patrol labor". Labors are mecha used in the Patlabor universe for everything from construction to military purposes. They're also, of course, used for crime, which is where the Patlabor units come in, as a division of the Tokyo police force. The series primarily follows the adventures of the Second Unit. I have no idea what this particular movie is about, but you can pretty much bet it'll be interesting, with drama and comedy and many things going boom.
- Tenchi Muyo! TV #1-2
Tenchi is a young man whose life becomes immensely complicated the day he wakes up the "demon" imprisoned in the family's shrine...and then an alien princess who's been hunting said demon (actually an alien pirate) comes to call...then her ship is destroyed and she has to stay...and that's only the beginning. The Tenchi story was originally released as a series of OAVs, then later retold in a TV series, which apparently bears little relation to the OAVs (note: the preceding summary is based on the OAVs).
- El Hazard: The Magnificent World #1
A young man, Mizuhara Makoto, and his somewhat insane high-school rival, Jinnai Katsuhiko, are involved in the publicity surrounding the discovery of possibly alien ruins in the basement of their high school. One night, as Makoto visits the ruins, about to fall into a trap of Jinnai's, they are both transported to another world: El Hazard. I've never seen this, but it's been very highly recommended.
So if you're interested in seeing some great animation with some truly diverse stories, check out the Anime Club's free ALL-DIGITAL showing, open to all on Friday, March 7th, from 7pm to midnight, in Engineering Teaching Center room ETC 2.108. For those not familiar with UT, the ETC building is located near 26th and Speedway; the main entrance is right on the north side of the 26th street bridge.
