A free showing of Japanese animation!
The UT Austin Anime Club will be presenting its thirteenth screening for the fall semester on Friday, November 22nd. The showing is free to all with an interest in great animation and stories.
Please keep in mind that showing schedules are always tentative, and that programs are not necessarily listed here in the order they'll be shown. Sometimes tapes show up late, or library runs longer than expected, or (once in a great while ) chaos will reign and the masses will force another episode of Fushigi Yugi to be shown...you get the idea.
On the program are:
Most listings are linked to the show's entry in the Anime Web Guide, or some other relevant web page; short-short summaries written by Rebecca Sims. Shows with a '*' by the title are being shown regularly this semester. All shows for this viewing are subtitled in English.
- Bakuen Campus Guardress * #3
30,000 years ago, the Dark World dimension tried to take over the earth. (Dark Kingdom, anyone?) They were defeated, and the Gateway to their dimension was sealed. Gateway Campus was then established to guard the Gateway, and was used as the site for training Guardians. Now, the leader of the Remnants, those inhabitants of the Dark World left behind when the Gateway was sealed, has woken up. And boy does he have plans--like reopening the Gateway, and getting revenge on the Guardians. Third in a four-OAV series.
- Villgust #1
God warriors! In a parallel universe, a dark god has been revived, and brought darkness to the land. To save Villgust from this evil fate, the goddess Windina choses eight warriors to defeat the forces of evil. Of course, they aren't yet aware of their destinies...but they're about to learn.
- Like the Clouds, Like the Wind (movie)
The (IMHO) sweet story of a young (peasant?) girl in ancient China who hears about the search for concubines to form the new harem of the new, young Emperor. She isn't interested until she hears that the Emperor's concubines get three meals a day and a nap, at which point she hastens to apply for the post. The movie of course focuses on her and her relationships with people at court, but we also get some action as political events take a dramatic turn. I think Miyazaki-sama or Studio Ghibli had something to do with this movie, but I can't remember the relationship at the moment.
- Fushigi Yuugi * #12
'Magical Girls' show about a schoolgirl, Miaka, who is transported via an ancient Chinese book to another world, where she is declared Suzaku no Miko, the priestess of the guardian deity of the kingdom she finds herself in. Romantic storyline, but also full of lots of fights with Miaka's protectors (which, at this point, are still being discovered). Just remember, Suzaku is a peacock, not a phoenix.
- Nadia * #10 (apparently not shown last week because the tape wasn't brought)
This show, set in the early 19th century and loosely based on Jules Verne's 20, 000 Leagues Under the Sea, follows the adventures of a young circus performer named Nadia, her pet lion King, and their friend Jean. Nadia, being fairly mysterious herself, of course has a mysterious jewel (named 'Blue Water'), which several other people are looking for; this, along with sea monsters, battleships, and ominous cults bent on world domination, accounts for many of their exploits.
So if you're interested in seeing some great animation with some truly diverse stories, check out the Anime Club free showing, open to all on Friday, November 22nd, from 7pm to midnight, in Engineering Teaching Center room 2.136. For those not familiar with UT, the ETC building is located near 26th and Speedway; the main entrance is right on the north side of the 26th street bridge.
