A free showing of Japanese animation!
The UT Austin Anime Club will be presenting its twelfth screening for the fall semester on Friday, November 15th. The showing is free to all with an interest in great animation and stories.
Please keep in mind that showing schedules are always tentative, and that programs are not necessarily listed here in the order they'll be shown. Sometimes tapes show up late, or library runs longer than expected, or (once in a great while ) chaos will reign and the masses will force another episode of Fushigi Yugi to be shown...you get the idea.
On the program are:
Most listings are linked to the show's entry in the Anime Web Guide, or some other relevant web page; short-short summaries written by Rebecca Sims. Shows with a '*' by the title are being shown regularly this semester. All shows for this viewing are subtitled in English.
- Bakuen Campus Guardress #2
30,000 years ago, the Dark World dimension tried to take over the earth. (Dark Kingdom, anyone?) They were defeated, and the Gateway to their dimension was sealed. Gateway Campus was then established to guard the Gateway, and was used as the site for training Guardians. Now, the leader of the Remnants, those inhabitants of the Dark World left behind when the Gateway was sealed, has woken up. And boy does he have plans--like reopening the Gateway, and getting revenge on the Guardians. First in a four-OAV series.
- Rose of Versailles (I don't know anymore what episodes we're showing; it's part of a story sub-arc from the series)
Set in 18th century, pre-Revolution France, this show follows the life of Oscar, a young woman raised as a man by her father, who was tired of having only daughters. As Oscar works her way up the ranks, she becomes the chief of Marie Antionette's bodyguards, and the Queen's close friend. As she sees the worsening conditions of the poor in France, she begins to question how things are being done. From what I can see, a very character-intensive show.
- Fam and Iri #4 *
Also known as 'Ruin Explorers', this show follows the exploits of the loud, brash Iri and her (sometimes) magic-using, cat/elf/something-girl partner Fam, as they quest for the 'Ultimate Power'. Along the way they encounter other rivals for the prize, who they later join forces with to fight a greater enemy. Of course, we find out everyone's reasons for wanting the Power, and get lots of bonding.
- Fushigi Yuugi * #11
'Magical Girls' show about a schoolgirl, Miaka, who is transported via an ancient Chinese book to another world, where she is declared Suzaku no Miko, the priestess of the guardian deity of the kingdom she finds herself in. Romantic storyline, but also full of lots of fights with Miaka's protectors (which, at this point, are still being discovered). Just remember, Suzaku is a peacock, not a phoenix.
- Blazing Transfer Student #1
The story of (big surprise) a transfer student's adventures as he adjusts to life in his new, rougher school, making new friends and learning to deal with the bullies who apparently run the place. (Note: I haven't actually seen this, and very little info was available online. So this may not be totally accurate, although it seems to get the gist.)
- Rurouni Kenshin #1
The adventures of a wandering samurai and former assassin, now defender of the downtrodden, and his friends who of course get into lots of trouble with local bullies and gangsters so he can rescue them. And the occasional warrior who wants to challenge him. (Note: I also haven't seen this show. But I found a web page for it. ^_^)
- Nadia * #10
This show, set in the early 19th century and loosely based on Jules Verne's 20, 000 Leagues Under the Sea, follows the adventures of a young circus performer named Nadia, her pet lion King, and their friend Jean. Nadia, being fairly mysterious herself, of course has a mysterious jewel (named 'Blue Water'), which several other people are looking for; this, along with sea monsters and battleships, accounts for many of their exploits.
So if you're interested in seeing some great animation with some truly diverse stories, check out the Anime Club free showing, open to all on Friday, November 15th, from 7pm to midnight, in Engineering Teaching Center room 2.136. For those not familiar with UT, the ETC building is located near 26th and Speedway; the main entrance is right on the north side of the 26th street bridge.
