A free showing of Japanese animation!
The UT Austin Anime Club will be presenting its eighth screening for the fall semester on Friday, October 18th. The showing is free to all with an interest in great animation and stories.
Please keep in mind that showing schedules are always tentative, and that programs are not necessarily listed here in the order they'll be shown. Sometimes tapes show up late, or library runs longer than expected, or (once in a great while ) chaos will reign and the masses will force another episode of Fushigi Yugi to be shown...you get the idea.
On the program are:
Most listings are linked to the show's entry in the Anime Web Guide, or some other relevant web page; short-short summaries written by Rebecca Sims. Shows with a '*' by the title are being shown regularly this semester. All shows for this viewing are subtitled in English.
- Child's Toy OVA
This show seems to be, from the character designs and general story, to be from the same people that brought us Marmalade Boy. It centers around child actress Sana and the new boy in her school, Hayama, with whom she has a love/rivalry relationship. Throw in Sana's wacky mother, Sana's lecherous manager, and a classmate who has a longtime crush on her, and you get what looks to be another nutty romantic comedy.
- Mahou Tsukai Tai (aka Magic User's Club) #1
Earth has been invaded by extremely powerful aliens who, after destroying the earth's defenses, have sat back and left the people of Earth alone, with the only signs of their continued presence being their ships hovering above. Meanwhile, a few students at Kitanohashi High School have formed the Magic User's Club, and decided that their goal is to free Earth from the invaders! An extremely funny and cute show.
- Idol Project #1-2
This is a pair of OAVs about 14-year-old Mimu's quest to become an idol singer, and the obstacles she encounters along the way. The first episode follows her attempts to get into the 'Excellent Idol Contest'. This looks to be a very surreal show in an ultra-kawaii sort of way.
- Fushigi Yuugi * #8
'Magical Girls' show about a schoolgirl, Miaka, who is transported via an ancient Chinese book to another world, where she is declared Suzaku no Miko, the priestess of the guardian deity of the kingdom she finds herself in. Romantic storyline, but also full of lots of fights with Miaka's protectors (which, at this point, are still being discovered). Just remember, Suzaku is a peacock, not a phoenix.
- Magic Knight Rayearth * #8
More Magical Girls! More hapless Japanese schoolgirls transported to other realms! (Kinda makes you wonder why they don't just stay the heck at home with the doors locked, doesn't it?) Hikaru (the enthusiastic redhead), Umi (the pretty, somewhat clueless blue-haired one) and Fuu (the smart one in green) have been brought to Cephiro by the power of the captured Princess Emeraude. Their goal: to become Magic Knights and awake the Mashin in order to defeat the Evil Priest Zagato and save Cephiro.
- Nadia * #8
This show, set in the early 19th century and loosely based on Jules Verne's 20, 000 Leagues Under the Sea, follows the adventures of a young circus performer named Nadia, her pet lion King, and their friend Jean. Nadia, being fairly mysterious herself, of course has a mysterious jewel (named 'Blue Water'), which several other people are looking for; this, along with sea monsters and battleships, accounts for many of their exploits.
So if you're interested in seeing some great animation with some truly diverse stories, check out the Anime Club free showing, open to all on Friday, October 18th, from 7pm to midnight, in Engineering Teaching Center room 2.136. For those not familiar with UT, the ETC building is located near 26th and Speedway; the main entrance is right on the north side of the 26th street bridge.
