About the Anime Club
The Anime Club is a volunteer-based, non-profit student organization at the University of Texas at Austin. Since 1987, we have been providing fans of Japanese animation, or anime, a place to meet, socialize, exchange information, and of course to watch a wide range of anime, from classic titles to the latest new series.
We hold regular showings—open to the public—of selected anime series, many of which are not commercially available in the United States. (Some of them have never been released here; others might have been out of print for years.) Note that unless otherwise indicated in a schedule listing, all of the titles that we show are in Japanese audio with English subtitles.
We strive to encompass a wide variety of genres and themes in our lineup. Slapstick comedy, dark social satire, a gritty treatise on the costs of war, and existential ramblings on the nature of self might all share spaces in a single night’s lineup. Depending on your tastes, some titles might be more to your liking than others. While we hope that you will at least sample all of the titles that we offer, it is perfectly acceptable to take a break out in the hall during shows that do not interest you. We also provide a Suggestion Cube, into which you can place anonymous requests for future titles, to help provide feedback and to have a hand in shaping upcoming schedules.
Please be aware that while our showings are, for the most part, “family-friendly,” we are a university-age student group, and some titles might include themes or imagery that might be more “R” than “PG.” If you ever have any questions about any of the shows, please feel free to ask an Officer before the meeting or during the break, and he or she can help you to decide whether a show is likely to be to your taste.
Additional Resources and Activities
In addition to the public anime showings (which are open to all, members and non-members alike), registered members of the Club also have access to a large lending library of hundreds of DVDs that may be checked out for home viewing.
The Anime Club also hosts a public mailing list through the UT email list service. Weekly schedules and periodic news updates are generally mailed to the list as well as being posted online here. Members may also use the list for general anime/Japan-related discussions.
Our main events are our regular meetings and anime screenings. We also on occasion organize outside events, such as group trips to an Austin-area theater screening a new anime movie.
Many members of the Club are also members of other Japanese or Asian language or cultural groups or societies; cross-attendance between events is common. If you have heard of a campus-based or Austin-area event and want to learn more, or if you are a member of another group hosting an upcoming event that you think might interest Anime Club members, feel free to bring it up at a weekly meeting (or via the Suggestion Cube).
Outside of UT, many members and Officers regularly attend various anime conventions in the region, and commonly organize groups for transportation, room sharing, or group-rate ticket ordering. For some of the most prominent and/or local events (such as A-Kon in Dallas during the summer, or Ikkicon here in Austin during the winter), we generally will forego holding an Anime Club meeting for a week if it would force a scheduling conflict with the convention. (Any such exceptions will be noted in the schedule listing for a given semester.)
