What is the

Academic Counselors Association?

Our Mission

  1. Build recognition of the importance of effective academic advising.
  2. Assist in the development and use of technology that benefits advisors.
  3. Expand research in the field.
  4. Recognize outstanding advisors and advising programs.
  5. Enhance the professional development of advisors.

What We're About

Academic counselors are personal links. We are dynamic professionals, mediators between students, faculty, and the administration. Professional advisors and counselors are communicators. We have the most direct contact with new students during orientation periods. We guide students and provide continuity throughout students' academic experiences. Academic advisors aid students with: curriculum choices, registration, degree requirements, major and career selections, interpreting university policies, referrals, and information concerning campus resources. Academic counselors have a unique perspective on the student body and the institutional rules that affect students.

What We Do

  1. Meet on a monthly basis, with a planned agenda and informal discussion. Meetings are rotated to different colleges.
  2. Host brown bag seminars where members share information and experiences from conferences and workshops.
  3. Sponsor annual Academic EXPO (formerly Academic Advising Day) on the West Mall.
  4. Reach out to colleges and universities throughout the state by hosting an annual professional development day.
  5. Organize interest groups and network with advisors from across campus with similar interests.
  6. Maintain a newsletter, Web site, and ACA archive materials.
  7. Host a holiday party, following the registration advising period.
  8. Sponsor student and professional scholarships.
