To Join—
The Peer Theatre for Social Change class (SW 360) is part of the Voices Against Violence Program at UT and is taught in collaboration with the School of Social Work.  You do not need any previous acting experience or social work background to be in the class.

Theatre for social change is really a two-semester commitment.
SW 360 (in Fall 2008) will give you a background on interpersonal violence issues and on theatre techniques.  You will be trained in interactive techniques that encourage audience participation.  You will then enroll in another 3-credit class  (Peer Theatre PerformanceSpring 2009, where you will perform the techniques learned in the Fall semester for audiences at UT and in the Austin Community. Students in this program have presented to over 3000 people in the last two years.  Because of the nature of our work, we cannot accept you into the Fall SW 360 class unless you can make a commitment to take Spring 2009 class and be with the program for at least a whole year.

Theatre for Social Change Syllabus | VAV Application Form | Recruiting Letter

contact the webmaster | updated 3/21/08

Class size is limited to only 16 students – so we are being selective about who we approve.  To help with our selection process we ask that you fill out the attached application form and drop it off at the SSB 5th Floor front desk, Attn. Lynn Hoare).  For a word version of the application form that you can email in, please contact Lynnhoare@mail.utexas.edu and she will send it to you. You may be called for an interview as part of the final selection process.

After the interview, if it looks like you will be a good match for the class, you will be approved to take the class and we will send your information to the Social Work department to clear you for registration.  You will then have to register for the class at the next available open time for you to add/drop classes.  We recommend that you register for a back-up class while we are in the application/interview phase and then do an add/drop once you are selected to be in this class.  If for some reason you cannot open the attached application, please let me know and I will send it to you as text in an email instead.  I would recommend that you send in the application as soon as possible because slots do get filled very quickly.

I have attached a couple of articles (Orange Magazine and Activism with Heart) that highlight our project and student perspectives about the class in case you would like to know more.  I have also attached the class syllabus from last year – it may change a little bit in 2007, but you can still get a good idea about it.

The VAV program staff look forward to receiving your application.  If you have any other questions – especially about registration, please do not hesitate to ask.  If this is too confusing, please call me at my office and I can explain the process to you.

Best wishes, Lynn Hoare
