Classical Mythology Honors, Fall, 2000

Paper 3 Assignment, Due Friday, October 13th

Using the symbols of Vladimir Propp, create a chart describing the life of Theseus as recorded by Apollodorus (Chapter 9). Then, in a paper of two to three pages (typed, double spaced), evaluate some aspect of the usefulness of Propp's system for interpreting the myth. You may address any one of the following questions:

1. Do Propp's functions fit this myth, or do you feel that you had to strain to make them work? Why?

2. What does the presence (or absence) of certain functions tell us about the myth of Theseus or its hero?

3. How do the functions in the Theseus myth compare with those present in the myths surrounding Perseus? How do you explain any similarities or differences?

4. Do Propp's functions seem to fit one part of the myth better than another? Why?

5. Compare the functions present in the Theseus myth with those in another traditional story you know, such as a fairy tale. How would you explain any similarities or differences?

6. Choose one or more of the Proppian functions you have found in this myth, and explain why you think that function appears in so many traditional tales.

7. Identify some functions of your own in the Perseus and Theseus myths. Explain why you think these functions are more useful than those of Propp in an analysis of these myths.

Hand in your chart of Proppian functions along with your paper.

Keep in mind the following guidelines.

1. You do not need to present a thorough critique of the Proppian system: just a brief discussion of one aspect, addressing one of the above questions, or a similar one of your own, will do the job.

2. Remember the guidelines I outlined in your first two paper assignments:

a. You do not need to use any secondary works besides Propp's chapter for this essay. Feel free, however, to use whatever secondary works you consider appropriate. Be sure that all such works are thoroughly cited, and that your essay reflects your own thinking.

b. Proofread carefully. Papers with egregious mistakes in grammar or spelling will receive very low grades. In particular, keep in mind the admonitions spelled out in my guidelines for writing papers.

c. Remember it is not sufficient simply to produce a long list of functions. You must give some thought to the significance of those functions.

d. Be sure to hand in your paper on time. Remember that papers will lose one letter grade for each week they are late.

e. Be very conscious of structure: provide a clear introduction and conclusion, and arrange your arguments logically and succinctly. Both your introduction and your conclusion should have a complete summary of your arguments.

f. It is important that you show accurate knowledge of the myth or myths you choose to analyze, but by no means should you include in your paper extensive summaries of the myth or myths. You can take for granted that your reader knows the myths, and you can spend your time analyzing rather than recounting them.

3. Please come to see me at any time if I can provide advice or assistance.

Grading:

Accuracy in recounting myth: 10 points

Understanding of Propp's theory: 20 points

Substance of arguments: 20 points

Structure: 20 points

Clarity: 20 points

Style, grammar, and spelling: 10 points
