Things to Think About as You Read Euripides' Medea

1. Why does Medea kill her children? What other options does she have?

2. What does the play have to say about the position of women?

3. What kinds of arguments does Jason make in response to Medea's accusations?

4. What are we to make of Creon? Is he an innocent victim, or a culprit?

5. To what extent is Aegeus culpable for what happens?

6. What is the role of the chorus here? Are they innocent bystanders, or accomplices? What do their songs contribute?

7. How should we respond to Medea's escape at the end of the play? What does it suggest about the gods?

8. Why do you think Euripides included a song singing the praises of Athens?
